Good grief! Not again! Today we have a new merchant of fear and paranoia–Donald Trump. If ever we needed to remember history, it is right now. But rather than cracking open the history books, go see the movie Trumbo out just now.

Donald Trump, Dalton Trumbo, House Committee on Un-American activities, fear-mongering, Joseph McCarthy era, paranoia, Jews, Negroes, screenwriters, Hollywood, racism,

Bryan Cranston as Trumbo.

It will tell you of the Joseph McCarthy era in the 1940’s and 1950’s and all you need to know about the House on Un-American Activities [The Congress] and The Hollywood Ten [screenwriters]. Dalton Trumbo was a screenplay writer persecuted and jailed by the Committe for his alleged Communist views.

Here’s the trailer for the movie.

It was a frightening time in which many were black listed [prevented from working]. Why? Because they associated with Communists. On the basis of suspicion and innuendo, friends and families were driven apart and people were thrown in jail. Freedom was eroded.

Donald Trump, Dalton Trumbo, House Committee on Un-American activities, fear-mongering, Joseph McCarthy era, paranoia, Jews, Negroes, screenwriters, Hollywood, racism,

Paranoia strikes deep.

Can’t happen again? Do Donald Trump’s statements about Muslims sound at all familiar? Take out the word Muslim and substitute the word Communist. Trump is very effectively up to the old trick of instilling fear to obtain power by scapegoating. It’s always us vs. them. The United States seems to be listening seriously to Trump’s vitriol. He urges the citizens–

  • To permit warrantless searches of Muslims.
  • To monitor the mosques.
  • To put the names of all Muslims into a data base.
  • Kill the families of terrorists if necessary.

What’s next? Can Trump frighten you enough to make you give up what is nearest and dearest to you?

If you fear Muslims [Islamists, radical or otherwise] enough, you might readily give up everything you’ve fought for such as—

  • the right to a fair trial. Instead you want warrantless searches leading to secret interrogations, incarceration without charges. Maybe even torture [waterboarding or whatever else].
  • the basic legal concept that charges should be brought and an opportunity to answer them in a court of law.
  • laws made against those who have committed an act not simply had thoughts. Conspiracy is something else again.
  • laws which apply equally to each and every one of us.

Nowadays we chuckle at what now seems absurd–all the anit-Communist propaganda from the forties and fifties.

Into your life it will creep

The idea of a data base for Muslims is absolutely repugnant.

There is an unfortunate faint echo from Nazi Germany in the 1930’s when

Donald Trump, Dalton Trumbo, House Committee on Un-American activities, fear-mongering, Joseph McCarthy era, paranoia, Jews, Negroes, screenwriters, Hollywood, racism,

It starts when you’re always afraid.

Jews were forced to wear gold stars on their forehead. Unless all people are equally protected under the law then no one is. Because, when it’s the Jews, Muslims, Blacks, homosexuals and women etc. who are deprived rights that everyone else has, then you might be next. Note the poster above. It targets not only Communists but frightens negroes with the KKK!

Here’s those memorable four lines of the Buffalo Springfield song For What It’s Worth.

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you away

So go see the terrific movie TRUMBO. And when you leave the theatre you may have the same concerns I did. At least I hope so.

As they say—we’ve seen this movie before and we should consider it a true reminder of history which is very much needed when such abominations spew from the mouth of Mr. Trump.

What worries me most? Trump is not alone. He speaks for many. Take a moment to ask yourself– why is it so easy for a man like Trump to frighten us? Who really knows? My best guess is that the fear and paranoia is instinctive and already well seated in the psyche of the populace. When conditions are right and the right person comes along, it just jumps out.

By the way, all artists should beware.

Want to get a real sense of what that Congressional Committe was like? Spend a few minutes with this video and its message will hopefully last you a lifetime.
